Alpacas
Alpacas are domesticated South American camelids, closely related to llamas, that are primarily raised for their soft, luxurious fiber. Native to the Andean highlands of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, they stand about 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh between 120-200 pounds.
They're gentle, herd-oriented animals with a calm temperament, making them popular on small farms. Alpacas come in two breeds: the Huacaya (with fluffy, crimped fleece) and the Suri (with silky, dreadlock-like fiber). Their fleece comes in over 20 natural colors and is prized for being hypoallergenic, warmer than wool, and incredibly soft. Unlike llamas, alpacas are bred specifically for fiber production rather than as pack animals.
